MILESTONES REACHED YEAR ONE

It is now one year since our company Tidewave R&D got established. We have had a steep learning curve of experiences and milestones! Here are some of the key happenings so far:

 PATENT PENDING! – December 2017
After a thorough patent landscape scan with Brann AB, we got our patent pending. We are proud to get the confirmation that our technology is innovative and unique enough to not collide with existing solutions. Finally we can show you our product without any IPR risk!

FINALISTS AT DNB HEALTHCARE PRIZE – December 2017

Out of over fifty applications we got to the final round at the annual DNB Healthcare Prize. It was a hard competition with extremely competent teams so we were honored to get to the top three companies – one vote from winning 1 million NOK!

 500.000 NOK PREPROJECT GRANT – November 2017
To reduce technical risk we got a 0,5 million grant from Innovation Norway trough the Environmental technology program. The project aims to map out the technical strengths and weaknesses of our prototypes, including various lab and workshop testing of several versions. We are still in the middle of the process, but have already identified necessary changes of materials and movement functionality. Stay tuned!

SUCCESSFUL TESTING WITH USERS – September 2017
Bryneheimen nursing home were the first to test our prototype with one of their residents. He described his experience with the turning mattress as comfortable and a feeling of secure positioning. While pursuing user focused development, it is important for us to have close dialogue with future users of our product. The user testing continues both in short and long studies.

WINNERS OF THE BEST HEALTH TECH STARTUP, USWC – September 2016
We represented the University of Stavanger at the international competition, University Startup World Cup, in Copenhagen. With around 40 impressive and promising companies from the around the world, we were extremely proud to receive the prize in the largest category “Best health tech Startup”.

TESTING THE PROTOTYPE AT THE HOSPITAL LAB – October 2017
To test our prototype in almost real surroundings we have had great use of the hospital lab at the University of Stavanger. The prototype has been included in the lab training of second-year nursing students so that they could test it, give feedback and thoughts around untapped possibilities.

MANUAL PROTOTYPE READY! – September 2017
After several concepts and MVP’s a full scale prototype of the most promising version was made. Still exploring which movement to go for we went for a “lego type”, meaning that all of the components were loose. By use of velcro (borrelås) on numerous cushions we were able to try unlimited of movements in the mattress. Time and cost efficient development!

1 MILLION NOK FROM THE NORWEGIAN RESEARCH COUNCIL – May 2017
The grant from FORNY Stud-Ent by the Norwegian Research council was crucial to accelerate our venture! This program provides a limited amount of Norwegian startups with 1 million NOK for a one year research project after at least one team member graduates from a masters degree. All three founders of Tidewave R&D delivered their thesis this spring, and together with Andreas we were all full time dedicated from the project start at August 1st!

WE HAVE AN ENGINEER IN OUR TEAM! – April 2017
After collecting important information that should be included in our prototype it was time to add an engineer to our team. So where do we find a skilled and creative engineer that is willing to join an early phase startup? We were lucky to meet Andreas trough our earlier helpful engineer. As an mechanical engineer with a couple of years work experience he was the perfect match! With a perfect timing of grants the following month we were able to make him the first official employee. We sure are proud to create new jobs in our region!

FIRST MVP READY – February 2017

The first technical demo of our concept were made. It consisted of a short film with the concept in 3D illustration. We got lots of valuable feedback on functions, design and user experience when introducing it to potential users and customers, health professionals and industry designers.

TIDEWAVE R&D ESTABLISHED – January 2017
Before we established our company we had already gained experiences, knowledge and reached a couple of milestones:

Granted 300.000 NOK from Norway Pumps & Pipes to conduct a technology transfer project. Together with Aarbakke Innovation we explored how technology from the petroleum industry could be used in our health tech product. After needs analysis rounds, workshops and concepts drawings the project resulted in several interesting possibilities of combining technology from other sectors.

Granted 100.000 NOK from Innovation Norway to verify our idea. We used it to get to know the market better by visiting potential customers around the country, increasing our health tech competency by joining conferences and building MVP’s.

Joined the Ipark Tech Startup Accelerator (ITSA). A great introduction to lean startup management and how to take an idea to market.

Got the first runner up prize at the national finale of Venture Cup, after also winning the first place in the local and regional finals. Here we competed against around 90 other student startup companies in Norway so it was the first confirmation that our startup had solid potential! In addition to the 50.000 NOK funding from the three prizes, we received the prevention award and 25.000 NOK from Tryg insurance company because of our impact in preventing injuries for Norwegian citizens.
